We're always a little wary of projects that set out to rework or cover Bob Marley's music, so the Dutch BMT Project's 'Revival, Chapter One' left us somewhat torn.
BMT (Bob Marley Tracks) is the brainchild of Peter Wezenbeek, a Dutch producer, sound engineer and drummer with a particular fascination for the drumming style of Wailers drummer Carlton Barrett. He was also once a member of The Shorts, best known for their hit 'Comment Ça Va'.
What started out as a Dutch project has over the years grown into an international production involving no fewer than 60 musicians. Among them, Wailers and I-Threes alumni such as Junior Marvin, Donald Kinsey, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. Vocalists Andrew Tosh, David Cairol and Brinsley Forde (who features on 'The Heathen'), are certainly no small names either.
That said, the Netherlands already has an excellent Marley tribute band in Rootsriders (vocalist Mo Ali was actually also involved in this project). However, with big names like Junior Marvin, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt and Brinsley Forde on board, it seems unlikely that we'll ever get to see BMT Project perform live.
The track list features near-flawless renditions of Marley classics such as 'Get Up Stand Up', 'Natural Mystic' and 'Is This Love', recorded between Peter's own Droomtent Recording Studio in IJmuiden and Anchor and Harry J in Kingston. The only exception is 'Babylon Feel This One', a version of a song that had previously existed only as an unreleased demo.
The artwork for 'Revival, Chapter One' is clearly modelled on that of Marley's 'Survival' album. But whereas the original featured the flags of various African nations, this time the flags represented are those of the countries of origin of the musicians involved.
'Revival, Chapter One' is a virtually faultless tribute to the work of the King of Reggae, bringing Wezenbeek's lifelong musical dream to fruition.
