Alexander Newman spotlights iconic British reggae label with 'Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers'

'Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers' by Alexander Newman, better known as Al Fingers, first saw the light back in 2010 through Stüssy, though it slipped under our radar at the time. Now, however, there's an updated second edition, published by One Love Books; the same imprint that previously brought us the delightful 'Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London'.

By Jah Rebel

While that first, instantly sold-out edition appeared as a paperback, One Love Books now delivers a beautifully produced hardcover version. The original print run included a mixtape CD - ‘Greensleeves: The First 10 Years’, also compiled by Al Fingers - and a poster. Those extras are unfortunately absent from this reissue, but there’s no need for disappointment: the book’s musical companion is still streaming on the VP Records SoundCloud page.

The introduction is penned by former The Clash bassist Paul Simonon, and alongside interviews with several key Greensleeves pioneers - founders Chris Sedgewick and Chris Cracknell, illustrator Tony McDermott, photographer Dave Hendley - the book offers an extensive discography of the label and, of course, reproductions of the first 100 Greensleeves record sleeves. Above all, it’s richly packed with a treasure trove of stunning archival photographs.

In short: everything you ever wanted to know about Greensleeves Records but were afraid to ask!

With the holidays fast approaching, this is without doubt the perfect gift for anyone still searching for a stylish reggae present.

‘Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers’ runs 272 pages and is available now from One Love Books!
