Fatbabs - This Love Is Forever (Big Scoop Records)

We mainly knew Fatbabs as the producer behind the late Naâman, taken from us far too soon. But with 'This Love Is Forever', Benjamin Jeanne proves he has since grown into a beatmaker of truly international stature. Teaming up with a wide cast of vocalists from France and the Caribbean, he delivers an album that easily ranks among the very best we've heard this year.

By Jah Rebel

Derajah and French rapper Miscellaneous (Pierre Scarland) open proceedings with ‘Here For You’, grime-infused vibes riding a rootsy melodica riddim. Capleton is his usual fiery self on ‘Hurry Up’, while the anti-war anthem ‘End Of War’ is quintessential Jah Lil.

Then Fatbabs drops two absolute bombs back-to-back: first, ‘Skanking Loud’, featuring Jamaican singer Kimeco alongside Vanzo, Cheeko, Walshy Fire and Davojah, a party starter of the highest order. It’s immediately followed by the roots-driven ‘Stay Conscious’, with Nyle Banks aka Fyakin and Queen Omega, who - as always - blows the roof clean off. Fyah!

Davojah is the most prominent voice across the track list, appearing not only on ‘Skanking Loud’ but also with solo cuts ‘Pokemon Rare’ and ganja tune ‘GG’. Things turn tropical with the Nigerian alté vibes of ‘Confiance En Toi’, featuring UK-based Claye on vocals, while Sika Rlion transports us to La Réunion with the irresistibly catchy ‘Plus Les Mêmes’.

Of course, Fatbabs’ close friend Naâman could not be absent. His voice lives on in ‘Rambo’ (again with Davojah, for which Fatbabs daringly sampled ‘Rag Waa Nacab Iyo Nasteexo’, an obscure tune by Somali singer Aamina Camaari). The album’s closer ‘Soldier’ is an acoustic rendition of the duet Naâman recorded with Biga*Ranx (previously only available on last year’s ‘Temple Road Extended’ 12-inch). But the most intimate tribute comes with ‘I Feel Your Love’, built around a refrain Naâman recorded shortly before his passing in February of this year.

Top-tier release with undeniable international appeal, and one that will keep you hitting the repeat button!
