Steel Alive - Under The Big Top EP (Bass Cookers)

Steel Alive, the duo of Pouss and Lucas, who now split their time between France and La Réunion, take strong musical cues from the vibrant world of the circus. The "big top" in the title of this new five-track EP, released on their recently founded Bass Cookers label, refers to the classic circus tent, a fitting choice, given the many circus-themed references found in both the titles and lyrics of the tracks on 'Under The Big Top'.

The EP kicks off with the instrumental ‘Trapeze’, where Pouss’ accordion takes centre stage, carried by a bassline reminiscent of Dennis Brown’s ‘Revolution’.

Fango, a newcomer from Lyon, fully embraces the circus vibe with ‘Maximum Circus’:

In the spotlight of the maximum circus,

Where dreams unfold, and fears disperse.

In the spotlight of the maximum circus,
Where dreams unfold, and fears disperse.
Under the big top where life’s a ride
Maximum Circus let the magic inside

Step right up to the centre stage,
In a world of wonder, where hearts engage.
Tightrope walking on life’s thin line,
Under the big tent, where stars align.

The instrumental flow continues with ‘Louder’, where Pouss’ accordion takes on a zydeco twist, echoing the sounds of Louisiana. A definite standout comes with ‘Should Pass Thru’, a tribute to reggae and sound system culture, featuring an excellent Charlie P on vocals! Steel Alive wraps up the EP with ‘Firewalking’, an instrumental dialogue between Pouss’ accordion and Khoe-Wa’s sitar.

Truly delightful introduction to the work of this French duo, marking their ten-year anniversary with the lively and imaginative ‘Under The Big Top’!
