With 'Vivants', French band I Woks, built around vocalists Seb and Gé, may already be on their third full-length album, for us, this was our first encounter with this crew from the Savoie region.
By Jah Rebel
There’s an eight-year gap between ‘Tout Va Très Bien…’, the band’s previous album, and ‘Vivants’, and with a title that translates to “alive”, Seb and Gé seem eager to give a clear sign of life. That being said, they prefer to put it this way: “Se sentir vivant, ce n’est pas simplement être capable de respirer mais c’est aussi, profiter de la vie et de ses petits plaisirs!” (“To feel alive is not just about being able to breathe, but also about enjoying life and its little pleasures!”).
Opener ‘To The Top’ immediately sets the mood as a true party starter; a track that will definitely get festival crowds moving. In ‘Pour Quelles Raisons’, Seb and Gé reflect on the selfish and egocentric behaviour of humanity, wondering why people keep heading straight for the abyss. Another highlight is ‘Stop Crying’, featuring the smooth saxophone of BoZo Sax (known from Danakil), whose playing weaves like a third voice between Seb and Gé.
I Woks hits hard once again with ‘Sérieux’, a collaboration with Tiwony who truly elevates the track. In the song, Seb and Gé confront us head-on with today’s harsh realities:
Il est temps d’être sérieux
Redescends de ton nuage et reviens à la réalité
La situation est périlleuse
Bienvenue dans un monde gouverné par des gens sans moralité
Il est temps d’être sérieux
Plus le temps de s’apitoyer, pour notre liberté il faut lutter
La situation est périlleuse
Mayday, j’entends l’humanité crier mayday
…
In ‘Ephémère’, another duet, this time with Loïc Paulin from Mystical Faya, they remind us of the importance of living in the moment and fully enjoying life:
On a tendance à oublier combien la vie est précieuse
Combien il est important de profiter de chaque instant
On se rappellera sûrement que la route est périlleuse
Mais qu’il nous appartient de vivre au moment présent
…
The solid stepper ‘Venez Tous’ celebrates the unifying power of music (“Venez tous, c’est la musique qui nous rassemble…”), while in ‘Jour Après Jour’, a collaboration with Max Livio, I Woks samples Yabby You’s ‘Covetous Men’, blending old and new.
I Woks closes the album with the hip-hop-tinged ‘Quelques Lignes’ (“a few lines”), in which Seb and Gé attempt to capture the magic of the written word:
Je t’écris ces lignes
Les courbes qu’elles dessinent
Je décris mes sentiments même dans mes silences
Chacun des signes a son importance
Je t’écris ces lignes
Les courbes qu’elles dessinent
Je décris mes sentiments même dans mes silences
Pour qu’enfin ce moment prenne tout son sens
