Dimi Dumo & Dibandi - Te Veel Praat (Self-published)

Much like his previous album, ‘Te Veel Praat’ once again offers an infectious mix of original songs and reggae-infused reinterpretations of well-known pop, rock, and folk tracks. All are spiced up with socially critical, introspective, yet often humorous lyrics, delivered in his distinctive Antwerp dialect.

‘Just A Friend Of Mine’ is a Dutch-language reworking of Vaya Con Dios’ 1988 hit, and word has it that Dani Klein certainly approved of his take. Meanwhile, ‘Keb Wa Vriende Gemokt’ (“I made some friends”) borrows from Tryo’s ‘J’ai Trouvé Des Amis’, with Dimi injecting a hilarious autobiographical twist into the lyrics:

’Rope’ follows the same approach, reinterpreting the Foo Fighters’ track of the same name, a band that producer Michel Bazzoni is a huge fan of. However, while the original song deals with an impossible relationship, Dimi Dumo’s version shifts the perspective to tell the story of a person with bipolar disorder, a change further illustrated in a playful animated music video featuring artwork by English artist and graphic designer Willow Beggs.

One of our personal favourites on ‘Te Veel Praat’ is undoubtedly ‘Vogelreservaat’ (“bird sanctuary”), effectively the album’s title track. For this one, Dimi joined forces with a remarkably subdued-sounding Slongs. At first listen, the song feels like a cheerful ode to the world of birds, but a closer listen reveals a deeper message, a stark warning about the urgent need to rethink our treatment of the planet before it’s too late:

van de kolibrie tot de specht
van de reiger tot de kraai 
en van de gors tot de papegaai
van de fuut nor de patrijs
en van de condor tot de sijs
van den ransuil tot de zwaan
en van de grasmus tot de zwaan

fluitend, baltsend deur mekaar
in harmonie, ‘t is nooit nie raar
da kan duizend mijlen vliegen

Op dees bolleke moge we wonen
in dees vogelreservaat
mor we kappen alle bomen

want sebiet is het te laat

Also standing out is ‘De Liefde N’hee Deust’, wrapped in an infectious stepper rhythm and topped off with a deliciously dubby trombone outro by Philip De Bie. But Dimi proves he doesn’t always need to reinterpret others’ material with ‘Romantiek’, a track he originally performed with folk group Les Øffs.

For the album’s closing track, ‘20 Jaar’, Dumo digs deep into history, drawing musical inspiration from ‘Fare Thee Well’ (also known as ‘The Turtle Dove’ or ‘10000 Miles’), an 18th-century English folk ballad!
