Danakil - Demain Peut-être (Baco Records)

A notable absence from ‘Demain Peut-être’ is Natty Jean, who is apparently focused on his own projects, but this certainly doesn’t dampen the overall vibe of the album.

The fact that Demain Peut-être follows in the footsteps of its predecessor Rien Ne Se Tait is immediately evident from the album cover, as Danakil once again turned to Bordeaux-based visual artist Michaël ‘Mika’ Husser for the artwork.

The pleasantly roots-infused title track ‘Demain Peut-être’ opens the album, with Balik putting “enjoying life” at the top of his to-do list:

C’est mon plaisir, c’est ma façon (It’s my pleasure, it’s my way)
De me construire et d’avancer (Of building myself and moving forward)
Je prends le temps de profiter (I take the time to enjoy)
Puisque le temps nous est compté (Since our time is limited)
…

’On Stage’ is classic Danakil. In the narrative style of the still-popular ‘Marley’ or ‘Ensemble’, from their previous album ‘Rien Ne Se Tait’, where the band’s twenty-year history was perfectly sketched in just a few lines, Balik this time takes us to a Danakil concert:

On va vous régaler! (We’re going to treat you!)
People est-ce que vous êtes prêts? (People, are you ready?) 
Criez ce soir hurlez sans déranger! (Scream tonight, shout without holding back!)
Faites comme chez vous quand les voisins s’en sont allés (Make yourself at home when the neighbors have gone away)

Que la soirée soit belle et que la nuit soit spéciale (May the evening be beautiful, and the night be special)
Danakil on stage et le public dans les étoiles (Danakil on stage, and the audience among the stars)
Ce soir on partage tout ce qu’on a mis dans les bagages (Tonight we share everything we packed in our bags)
Oh oui les pianos nous entraînent les cuivres se régalent (Oh yes, the pianos drive us, and the brass instruments delight)
Aveuglés par les lumières de la scène (Blinded by the stage lights)
Oubliez tous les problèmes de la veille (Forget all the problems from yesterday)
Cherchez dans les yeux de celui ou de celle (Look into the eyes of the one)
Qui vous accompagne la flamme d’un moment éternel (Who’s with you and find the spark of an eternal moment)

The track list of ‘Demain Peut-être’ doesn’t feature any guest vocalists, but in the ska tune ‘Ça Va Ça Vient’, the voice of Rita, Balik’s daughter, can be briefly heard.

Wrapped in a nice, dubby melodica track, Balik sings about self-reflection, accepting imperfections, and the search for meaning in a chaotic life, in ‘Tu Le Sais’.

With ‘Marie-Antoinette’, a nod to the French Revolution, Balik critiques social inequality, the power of money, and the manipulation of the elite.

On a critical note… Closing track ‘Depuis Le Début’, an acoustic love ballad, could perhaps have been left out.

As expected, the album is packed with solid tracks, but asked to highlight one, we’d certainly opt for ‘La Démocratie Balbutie’ (“democracy stutters”), because wherever you look these days, it seems like democracy is under threat. We wouldn’t want to deny you the full lyrics to this track:
