Naomi Cowan - Welcome To Paradise (Easy Star Records)

Cowan is de dochter van producer, MC en impresario Tommy Cowan en gospel- en reggaezangeres Carlene Davis. De gospelinvloeden, zo prominent aanwezig in het werk van haar moeder, zult u op ‘Welcome To Paradise’ echter niet aantreffen.

Naomi Cowan: “Gospel was never something I felt drawn to even though that’s my foundation. Because of how I was raised, my faith naturally flows through everything I do. But I’ve always wanted to reach as many people as possible through my music.”

Hoe klinkt ‘Welcome To Paradise’ dan wel? Als een stoofpotje met invloeden uit rocksteady, reggae en dancehall, bijgekruid met snuifjes pop, r&b en soul.

Naomi Cowan: “We brought back all those foundational reggae elements - the horns, the basslines, the grooves - and fused them with modern drums and textures. It’s reggae evolving, but it’s still true to the core.”

Het album opent met ‘Beautiful Ska’, geen ska maar een dubby hedendaagse herwerking van ‘Ba Ba Boom’, de grote hit van ska- en rocksteadyformatie The Jamaicans, waarvan ook Tommy Cowan nog ooit deel van uitmaakte.

Gevraagd naar haar favoriete nummer op het album, twijfelt Naomi echter geen seconde: “It’s ‘Version’ hands down! It’s everybody’s favorite. I love to sing it; love how it sounds musically and vocally.”. In dat nummer, op het eerste gehoor een aanstekelijke ode aan de soundsystem-cultuur, maar eigenlijk een metafoor voor de fysieke aspecten van een liefdesrelatie (“Press up against you like a tune…”, “Flip mi like a vinyl…”, “Careful with di needle…”), zijn flarden uit Johnny Osbourne’s ‘Rock It Tonight (Dub Plate Playing)’ te horen.

Een andere aanrader is zeker de female empowerment-tune ‘Woman Respect’, brengt Cowan een ode aan vrouwelijke rolmodellen uit de reggae en dancehall als Rita Marley, Sister Nancy en natuurlijk haar moeder, Carlene Davis. Maar in het nummer vraagt ze vooral respect voor vrouwen, want: “Yuh never see no man born nuh baby yet!”.

Naomi Cowan: “I think women are such a magnificent representation of God’s creativity, in terms of how our minds work, our bodies work. Yes, we have had a feminist movement which has empowered us to be very strong, but I do feel at times we as women don’t give each other enough respect. We demand it from the world, but do we give it to each other? Society raises women to compete against each other. I think it is very important that we as women in music continue to push our message forward.”

De enige combination tune op ‘Welcome To Paradise’ is ‘Lonely Love’ waarin ook Runkus te horen is. In ‘Moments’ klinkt het plots: “I don’t want somebody who’s loving everybody. Need a shy guy. Wanna be my guy?”, wat ondergetekende betreft een duidelijke knipoog naar ‘Shy Guy’ de wereldhit van Diana King.

Besluiten doet Cowan met ‘Imagine’, een intieme pianoballad die ons wat aan het werk van Alicia Keys deed denken.

Ook het laatste woord gaat nog naar Naomi: “The message I want people to take away is to choose love always, and the experience I want them to have is to hopefully recognize that as people, we don’t have to be one-dimensional all the time. We have many aspects to who we are, and we can all be ourselves and still be worthy of the highest love. I want listeners to feel loved within themselves. I would love for them to just walk away and feel a little bit more confident, to feel a little bit more open hearted, a little bit more excited about who they are. I think we walk around trying to be who we think we’re supposed to be. So that’s’ why this album is so vulnerable!”
