Groundation - Candle Burning (Young Tree Records/Baco Records)

Het vertrouwde recept - reggae met stevige jazzinvloeden - blijft natuurlijk ongewijzigd, al geeft Harrison Stafford meer dan vroeger ruimte aan anderen: backing vocalistes Kerri-Ann Lewis en Thamar Williams, en zelfs bassist Isaiah Palmer nemen af en toe de microfoon over.

En ook voor dit album stelde Groundation weer een vrij indrukwekkend gastenlijstje samen. In ‘The Youth’ horen we de vertrouwde stemmen van Michael Rose en Alpha Blondy, en Mutabaruka mag zijn ding doen in ‘The Light’. Het meest verassend is wellicht de samenwerking met de Zimbabwaanse veteraan Thomas Mapfumo voor ‘Holding On’.

In de intro van het nummer horen we een Braziliaanse berimbau en atabaque-drum, instrumenten uit de capoeira-, maculelê- en santeria-tradities, hier ingespeeld door de Braziliaanse percussionist Israel Arcanjo. Maar het hadden dus net zo goed een Zimbabwaanse chipendani en ngoma kunnen zijn. Want over een ritme dat dankzij de melodica van Pau Dangla Valls wat naar Brazilliaanse guitarrada of carimbo neigt, horen we daarna Thomas Mapfumo in het Shona zingen:

De inhoudelijke rode draad op ‘Candle Burning’ is licht en energie. Het begint natuurlijk bij het geslaagde hoesontwerp van de Amerikaanse boekomslagontwerper Brandi Doane McCann, waarin bovendien een hele filosofie besloten ligt: “The deep black represents us, the individual. The bands of color symbolize life, the fleeting horizon of our brief timeline. The brilliant sunburst of gold to purple is the infinite light source, hope, and eternal energy that guides us. And like paper, delicate and fragile, this life of ours is something to honor and protect.”

Songtitels als ‘Energy’, ‘The Light’, ‘Candle Burning’ of ‘Keeper Of The Flame’, spreken dan weer voor zichzelf, en in de lyrics horen we passages als: “Don’t run away and your future will be bright. Have confidence, out of the darkness must come out the light!” (‘Energy’) of “In the mists of the darkness celebrate the light!” (‘Keeper Of The Flame’).

Het meest tot onze verbeelding sprak echter ‘The Light’, waarin Mutabaruka op zijn gekende wijze orakelt:

All manners of existence among the four corners of the world
Have reflected the one principle teaching
That there is a light, a source, an energy
And this energy that is swirling, and circling, and surrounding us
It lasts forever, indeed it has no end
But for the physical, the individual, life is something quite different
Our energy burns bright until we reach our true potential
Or perhaps we fail
But with time we come into great reflection
What purpose do we serve and what is the right direction?

Zelf verwoordt Harrison Stafford het graag als volgt: “‘Candle Burning’ is about the light that guides us, the inner fire that fuels our journey, and the energy that connects all things.”
