Jah Lil - Can A Man Cry (Out Deh Records)

Zoals veel andere Jamaicaanse artiesten zette Jah Lil zijn eerste muzikale stappen in de kerk, in zijn geval als dirigent van het jeugdkoor van zijn pinkstergemeente.

In 2011 behaalde hij de eerste plaats in een gospelwedstrijd en trok zo de aandacht van het bekende VP Records label. Tussen 2014 en 2017 verschenen met ‘One Wrong One Right’, ‘Siren’ en ‘Smile’ drie singles op evenveel edities van de ‘Strictly The Best’-compilaties van VP, maar dan begon Jah Lil last te krijgen van hartkloppingen en vermoeidheid, en werd hij uiteindelijk gediagnosticeerd met een depressie.

De medicatie die hij hiervoor kreeg voorgeschreven verslechterden zijn toestand echter alleen maar, en als tenslotte slaapapneu wordt vastgesteld, heeft Jah Lil zijn muziekcarrière al bijna opgegeven. De man besloot echter on terug te vechten en verwerkte die donkere periode in songs als ‘Step By Step’ (“Step by step, step by step, journey feels a little bit shorter. Breath by breath, breath by breath, journey feels a little bit softer…”), ‘Above Water’ (“And as I tread this waters of life, oh I have to get it right, oh I can’t get it wrong. If I do I will lose my life. So much in the sea now, that I just can’t see, and I’m feeling weary, yeah… All I can depend is on me!”), en de naar hip-hop neigende afsluiter ‘Rebirth’ (“Rebirth oh, man feel pain and feel hurt…”).

De afrobeats van ‘Location’ waren niet echt ons kopje thee, maar nummers als het al vermelde ‘Above Water’ (geproduceerd door ZIAH .PUSH over een herwerking van de Cuss Cuss riddim), ‘Among Monsters’, een nummer met het heerlijke refrein: “I’m living amongst monsters, who are you I wonder? Living amongst monsters, for my blood they hunger. I am living amongst monsters, who are you I wonder? Living amongst monsters, they kill, they plunder!”, of het zeer aanstekelijke ‘Step By Step’, konden ons zeker bekoren.

Vooral met het titelnummer van dit album, waarin hij zich van zijn kwetsbaarste kant toont en zijn landgenoten oproept om wat meer hun gevoelens toe te laten en te tonen, oogstte Jah Lil al heel wat succes in Jamaica, en we willen u de volledige tekst van het nummer dan ook nog graag meegeven:
