Het is druk geweest in de Badasonic Studio in Charleroi, want ook het Amerikaanse gezelschap The Bandulus (Jamaicaans patois voor bandieten of oplichters) kwam er een nieuwe langspeler opnemen.

The Bandulus zijn het geesteskind van Jeremy Peña (voorheen al actief bij Los Skarnales en Trenchtown Texans), die de band oorspronkelijk oprichtte in Austin, Texas, maar ondertussen naar Portland in Oregon verhuisde. De band is met ‘Tell It Like It Is’ al aan zijn vierde langspeler toe.
Dat The Bandulus in de Badasonic Studio van Nico Leonard terechtkwamen berust volgens Jeremy Peña op een ongelukkige of gelukkige samenloop van omstandigheden: “We originally didn’t plan a recording session; In July of 2022 we were supposed to play at the London International Ska Festival, but three weeks before that date, the promoter cancelled the event. Mario (lead guitar & percussion, red.), Curtis (bass & percussion, red.) and myself had nonrefundable tickets and hotel rooms, so we all decided to go with our wives to Europe and have some fun. Three months prior to going, we played at Freedom Sounds Festival in Cologne, Germany. There we met Nico Leonard from Badasonic Records and we immediately hit it off. So when the news of the London gig came, I contacted Nico to see if e could record a few songs. I sent him five demos and we ended up recording eight tracks in the span of two days. We married those eight tracks with the four we had been working on in Portland and ‘Tell It Like It is’ was born!”.
Voor Peña kwam met die samenwerking een droom in vervulling: “I have been a fan of his for about 18 years. When I first heard The Moon Invaders, they had just released their ‘The Fine Line’ album. All their records have been staples of mine for years. They were all recorded at Pum Pum Hotel, which is now Badasonic Studio in Charleroi, Belgium. So I was definitely geeking out while we were there. At the end of the first day, we could hear how warm the tones were and we were just floored. I had the thought of having Curtis mix the record, but ultimately everyone thought we should have Nico do it. He gladly obliged and did an amazing job. I love the way it turned out. And now I get to brag about having Nico’s work on one of our albums!”.
Zoals ze het al mooi samenvatten in de titel van hun debuutalbum ‘Ska Reggae Soul’ (Soul Shot Records, 2010), brengen The Bandulus een aanstekelijke mix van ska, rocksteady, reggae en soul.
Jeremy Peña: “Broken love songs are my favorite to write. Honestly, I try to write the same song over and over, just in a different way. Some of these come from experience, and others are imagined. My wife and I have been together for 23 years, so there is plenty of material to draw from!”.
Opener en titelnummer ‘Tell It Like It Is’ is een uitstekende rocksteady-versie van Aaron Neville’s soulklassieker uit 1966, met het aanstekelijke instrumentale ska-nummer ‘West Portland Park’, waarin vooral de mooie melodica- en pianopartijen van respectievelijk Jeremy Peña en Nico Leonard opvallen, brengt de band een ode aan hun nieuwe thuisbasis (al kan je er ook een knipoog in zien naar het Jamaicaanse muzieklandschap in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw), en met pareltjes van nummers als ‘Sunny Days’ of afsluiter ‘Honest Goodbye’ zitten we dan weer bijna in het MOTOWN-universum.
Onze persoonlijke favoriet op ‘Tell It Like It Is’, is echter ‘Shadows’, een break up tune met een refrein dat u al na één keer luidop zult meezingen! ‘Tell It Like It Is’ is van het beste dat wij al uit de Badasonic Studio hoorden komen. Meer van dit!
The Bandulus komen ‘Tell It Like It Is’ live voorstellen op 27 april in de VK in Brussel, waar ze die avond samen met The Utopians op het podium staan in het kader van Tell%20It%20Like%20It%20Is%20by%20The%20Bandulus”>BABA BOOM!
